Birth: 1749 Death: unknown
Martha was born around the year 1749, possibly in New Jersey.
She was the daughter of Captain George Yates (1727 – 1777), who circa 1775 provided care & comfort to soldiers suffering from possible smallpox in the Revolutionary War. He may have contracted it himself leading to his own death.
Her mother was Frances Fielding Lewis (1731 – 1777), and through her lineage she was related to President George Washington, the Lewis & Clark Expedition's Meriwhether Lewis, Robert E. Lee, England's Princess Diana, & Queen Elizabeth II!
Some Ancestry.com members claim she is a descendent of Saint and Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne.
On 16 May 1769 at the age of 19 she married David Hand, who was an Ensign during the Revolutionary War that would follow.
They were the parents of 8 children: Sarah (1770-1804), Jeremiah (1772-1851), Mercy (1774-1847), Martha (1776- ), David (1777-1867), Lydia (1781- ), George (1784- ) and Joshua (1786- ).
Sometime after 1786 Martha passed away.
