Family Recorded, in A Family History, by Donovan Faust, Secondary quality. The Newlins were among the earliest settlers in the colony. Martha's great-grandfather, Nicholas Newlin, was a prosperous farmer in Mountmellick, County Leix, Ireland during the latter 1600's. Because of his active Quaker beliefs, Nicholas had been victimized by, among other things, having his crops and livestock confiscated. It was this persecution that made him decide to come to America, although he was not a young man at the time.

His son Nathaniel also came from Ireland and in 1724 purchased a large irregular-shaped parcel of land consisting of 1100 acres. It was in what is now known as Newlin Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania and very close to where William Harvey had settled twelve years earlier.

Nathaniel Newlin married Mary Mendenhall of Wiltshire, England about 1690. Among their children was a son, also named Nathaniel, who married Jane Woodward of Middletown, Pennsylvania; it was their daughter Martha who married Isaac Harvey. Mary Mendenhall was descended on her mother's side from the ancient Strode family who came to England from France at the time of the Conquest.
