Bliss, being first duly sworn, depose and say: That I am the widow of Alfred J. L. Bliss, who was enlisted, February 27, 1864, as a private in Co. A 21 Regiment Mich. Infantry at Grand Rapids, Mich., for the term of 3 years, and transferred to Co. B 14 Mich. Infantry, June 8, 1865, and mustered out at Louisville, Ky., July 18, 1865, and who was a pensioner under Certificate No. 503,450, and who died at Prairie City, Oregon, on November 10, 1914; that I am unable to procure and submit a certified copy of public record showing the date of said soldier's death, for the reason that (t)here is no such public record in this County and State, but I am submitting herewith the affidavit thereof of the attending physician, Dr. V. C. Belknap, M.D.; that I am unable to furnish certified copy of public or church record showing date of my marriage to said soldier, for the reason that we were married in the State of Kansas and know of no such record there and was so married by an aged Methodist Minister about 30 years ago, and has not been there for about that period of time and know no one there and have no means of obtaining such record, and the only evidence I have and can furnish is the record kept in our family bible which shows that we were married on September 28, 1885, in said State; that the record in my family bible also shows that my husband's first wife was Isadore Amelia Ware to whom he was married November 26, 1857, and that she died July 20, 1876, at Prairie City, Oregon, and the 2nd wife of said soldier was Alice B. Foster, ne Leighton, to whom he was married October 12, 1879, and that she died in the State of Mich. January 4, 1882, which is all the evidence of the soldier's former wives that I am able to produce; that I am unable to produce any evidence at all of the date of the death of my former husband, except this my affidavit that his name was James Spafford, and that he died in Sumner County, Kansas, on or about April 12, 1885 to the best of my recollection, but am not sure of the date; that my said former husband never did serve in the Army or Navy of [missing line] am unable to furnish testimony of any witnesses who have known me and the said soldier from the time we became of marriageable age, showing if I had been married more than once and soldier more than twice prior to our marriage with one another, for the reason that there are, at this date, no such witnesses living, but, in lieu thereof, I am herewith submitting the affidavits of persons who have known us for more than 20 years to the effect that we have during said time lived together as husband and wife, and recognized as such, continuously until his death, and I do solemnly swear that said soldier and myself were duly married as above herein stated and that we were constantly from said time until his death man and wife and living as such together and having many children of the issue of said marriage, and that Ruby Ruth Bliss is the youngest one of said children, who was born Sept. 10, 1900, and she is still living with me, and that she is now my only minor child; that in making my declaration for pension I trusted to my memory only, but in this affidavit I have referred to my family bible to obtain the absolutely correct data for this my affidavit according to said record; that this is the very best evidence I can produce, and if it is not sufficient I will be compelled to give up my just right to widow's pension, as time has obliterated all other evidence in the matter.

Hand Signed: MARTHA J.
