From Virginia marriage records: "LANE, William & CARR, Martha; well before 23 May 1763; bride was a daughter of William Carr (died WC 1702/03) and was a widow by 23 May 1763; she was the mother of Joseph & James LANE (of Loudon county, Virginia in 1763)."[1]
Obituary from the Virginia Gazette (Rind) March 10, 1774, p. 3 (index available at the Colonial Williamsburg website): "Died on the 9th of February at the home of Captain Benedict Middleton in Westmoreland, Mrs Martha Lane, aged 78 years; she was a good christian, an affectionate wife, a tender mother, and a good mistress; and she was justly esteemed by all those of her acquaintance." (This indicates that Martha died on 9 Feb 1774, a widow, and that she was born around 1696. Note that Martha's daughter Hannah married Benedict Middleton.)
Will of William Lane, summarized on Ancestry as: "Lane, William, 19 Aug. 1758; 26 Aug. 1760. Son James plantation; son William Carr Lane land; sons Joseph and James land; dau. Hannah Middleton 2 negroes and cattle; wife Martha exx." This indicates that William died between 1758 and 1760, and Martha his wife lived after that as she was the executrix for the will. It also suggests that the children were all of age, so born before about 1738.[2]
Application for US Sons of the American Revolution provides the following tree:
William Lane, born 1693 in Westmoreland, Virginia, died in Westmoreland. Married Martha Carr, married circa 1715/16.
Martha was born circa 1693/94 in Westmoreland, died after 1769.
He was son of James Lane and Martha Tidwell.[3]
