Origins
The H. Edgar Hill Genealogy page suggests that Richard did in fact marry a woman named Martha, but that her surname was not 'Dennis'. He suggests that the name Dennis comes from the misreading of an old court record in Maryland as pointed out by an excellent book on the family by Robert Smith. Edward L. Woodyard of Armonk, NY. suggests that Mary's surname may have been " Deny's ". It is possible that there is some confusion. For example, Mary is referenced as having been born in France, she is also referenced as the daughter of John Dennis and Elizabeth of Sommerset Co., MD. Mary's parents are believed to have settled in Sommerset County after fleeing France about 1685 to join other Huguenot families in America. It may be possible that some researchers have mistaken the name Deny's for Dennis. Additional research is necessary.
