About Martha Elizabeth Mayes
Martha Vann was born on October 04, 1852 in the Saline District, Cherokee Nation. Her parents were David Vann and Martha McNair, both Cherokee. Martha's father was killed in the Civil War. She married Samuel Mayes, also Cherokee, on November 09, 1871. They were the parents of William, Joseph, and Carrie (Mary). Samuel, Martha, and all three children are listed together on the 1900 U.S. Census.
Martha was enrolled by the Dawes Commission in 1902 and was approved for a share of the Eastern Cherokee (Guion Miller) payment in 1907. She died on December 27, 1907 in Pryor, Oklahoma, and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery, Mayes County, Oklahoma.
Mayes's first wife died in 1907, and in 1913 he married Minnie Harrison. Mayes died in Pryor on December 12, 1927.
