Biography

Martha Durfee was born 20 February 1702 at Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the sixth daughter of Thomas Durfee of Portsmouth, and his wife, Ann Freeborn.[1]

Along with the rest of her sisters, Martha was to have 40 shillings when she turned 18, according to the will of her maternal grandfather, Gideon Freeborn, which was proved 14 January 1719/20.[2] The will of her father proved 24 February 1729, gave all the sisters money from certain lands, equally divided, a bed each, and the unmarried daughters were to receive household goods otherwise not disposed of, and a 'good cow' each. The will also states that all the sisters were sharing the same 'eastward' chamber.[3]

Marriage and children

She married 27 December 1730 at Portsmouth, Oliver Read, of Freetown, Massachusetts, who had been born there 14 October 1701, the son of John and Mary Read.[4]

They had issue (all born at Freetown, Massachusetts);[4]

Joseph Read, born 11 December 1732, married and had issue;
Oliver Read, born 21 August 1734, married and had issue;
Mary Read, born 31 March 1736, married Philip Slade, and had issue;
Jonathan Read, born 13 November 1737, married and had issue;
Wait Read, born 6 December 1739, married Samuel Weaver, and had issue;
Nathan Read, born 16 June 1742;
Benjamin Read, born 28 March 1744;
Gideon Read, born 5 February 1746.
The will of her husband, Oliver Read, was dated 3 June 1777 and recorded at Bristol, Rhode Island, 3 November 1778.[4] There is a listing of the children named in the will, but not whether Martha was named, so it's not clear when she died.

These profiles originally had 1777 and 1771 but without any sources being cited.
