Oldest of six children born to John Sumpter and Catherine (maiden name unknown). --Raised in an area of Burke County that is now Caldwell County. --Married on February 16, 1786, in Burke County, NC to Abraham Sudderth. --Abraham and Martha acquired large tracts of land in Caldwell County, Cherokee County, and Ashe County. --Martha died in 1746 at the age of 80, 11 days short of her 60th anniversary to Abraham, who later died in 1853. --Her nickname was Patty. --12 children, ten of whom lived to be adults, married, and raised families. William (1787-1881), John R (1789-1865), James (1790-1870), Emanuel (1791-?), Sarah (1793-1841), Margaret (1795-?), Catherine (1797-1886), Nancy (1799-1889), Abraham, Jr.(1800-1868), Emanuel (1802-?), Thomas (1805-1847), and Leemiary Emmely Sudderth (1809-1859).
