  • John1 Whipple (MatthewA) baptized 29 August 1596 in Bocking, Essex County, England; died 30 June 1669 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. He married (1) Susanna (probably Stacey) abt 1620 at Bocking; died after 13 July 1661 in Ipswich, Massachusetts (2) the widow Janet (Jennet) Dickinson after 1662 at Ipswich. A clothier, John appears to have emmigrated in 1638. He farmed and engaged in several business ventures, was an eight term delegate to the general court, Ipswich clerk of writs for several terms, deacon and ruling elder of the Ipswich church.
  • Children of John and Susannah Whipple, all but Sarah born in Bocking:

    • iv. .... etc.
  • JOHN'S FIRST MARRIAGE is not listed in St. Mary's parish register. Some genealogists have identified his wife as Sarah Hawkins, others as Susannah Stacy or Clark. It seems more plausible to this author that is was Susannah Stacy or Clark. Hawkins has been proposed by those who claim that the Whipple brothers married Hawkins sisters. Sarah and Ann Hawkins were married in Bocking in 1622; Anne to Matthew Whipple on May 7 and Sarah to William Coppin on September 26. .... etc.

    • * Major Matthew Whipple, of Ipswich, Mass., grandfather of General William Whipple, is stated in the Appendix to "The Presentation of Flags to the Schools of Portsmouth, N. H.," Portsmouth, 1890, page 20, to have been a grandson of Matthew Whipple of Ipswich (brother of Elder John Whipple), through his son John. As both brothers, Matthew and John, had sons John, "these three Johns are grievously confounded by most writers who have noticed them," and following the authority there quoted the mistake occurred. It is now corrected on the authority of a scarce pamphlet, entitled "A brief Genealogy of the Whipple Family,' compiled by John H. Boutelle of Woburn, for Oliver M. Whipple, Esq., of Lowell, Mass., Lowell, 1857, where "the earlier generations especially have been traced through, and several important points, hitherto wrongly printed, are now satisfactorily investigated," as stated in the "N. E. H. G. Register," vol. XI, page 360.
