Estate notes

”An inventory of his [William Wood’s] estate was taken in Jul 1697 and the estate was divided among his 10 children: William, George, Josiah, Daniel, John, Joseph, Mary, Sarah, Margaret and Rebecca. The original will, badly mutilated, is still preserved, but it was not accepted for probate. We find no trace of the deed to William, Jr., mentioned as having been written on the same day as the will. Martha, who was to have been executrix, evidently predeceased her husband. The problem of William, Jr.'s having or not having an heir was soon solved; for his first child was born six months after the date of the will. Perhaps he was then living on Long Island - as he certainly was for a time somewhat later - and so not in close touch with the folks at home ...”

Origins

Named in the 1673 will of Ralph Earle: “... doe give and bequeath to my three daughters, that is to say, Mary the wife of William Cory, Martha the wife of William Wood, and Sarah, widow to the late deceased Thomas Cornell, to Each of them an Equall share ...”
