Biographie Biography

Residences of Martin Boutet (1617-1686), professor of mathematics and choirmaster (1).

The character of Martin Boutet is significant, because his school located close to the fort to Huron, was confused a long time with the chapelle_Champlain (E Mayrand 1898, P.B Casgrain 1909, Dumas, 1957). The life of this man is closely related to Fabrique_Notre_Dame_de_Québec like with the College of the Jesuits.

Martin Boutet receives in 1651, of the Factory, a house for his functions of Clerk of the parish. He dealt with the sale of the benches. Honorius Provost in its book on Censive Notre_Dame_de_Québec (2), explains:

Helene Desportes (3) (1620-1675), woman of Guillaume Hébert, is the first white child born with the country. December 27, 1639, in front of the Piraube notary, it marries in second weddings, Noël Morin (1616-1680). This one then stated to have the pleasure of a house out of wooden located close to the Notre_Dame_de_Recouvrance Church. In 1651, the Council of Quebec and the Factory bought the hut out of wooden of Noël Morin for the account of Martin Boutet, choirmaster and head of the parochial choral society.

Honorius Provost speaks to us about the recipient of the transaction:

"On the back of this extract, is written hand of the Father Jerome Lallement, superior of the Jesuits: Paper concerning the house of the Clerk and the Church or the enfans and Officiers of Chorus ... Extracted the register of the store, for the payment of the house of the presbytery where is now St-Martin, i.e. Mr Martin Boutet whose nickname was of Saint Martin's day "(2, p.14).

Honorius Provost describes the masonries of Martin Boutet:

"On this site two houses were, of which one, out of wood, was not other than that referred to above, acquired by the Council of Quebec for the benefit of the Factory, and occupied by Martin Boutet under the terms of a convention September first, 1651. The second house was of masonry, having been built by Boutet in 1649, and we could perhaps identify it with the Vallée house or the current wax Museum "(2, p. 20)

Lucien Campeau (4) stresses that in 1651, Martin Boutet was responsible for the boarding school of the College of the Jesuits. The Jesuits did not have boarders in the college itself. The boarding school was undoubtedly localised close to the fort of the Huron ones.

Plan of Jean_Bourdon (1660)

In 1661, the Father Joseph Antoine Poncet, priest, request with Madam d' Ailleboust (Barb of Boullongne), to yield a piece of ground located on the reserve of Ailleboust, on which is the boarding school and the school of song directed by Martin Boutet. This transfer is confirmed by a letter of Madam d' Ailleboust with Monseigneur de Laval, September 16, 1661. perhaps (5) the building builds by the Huron ones is located close to their fort within Jean Bourdon of 1660. Silvio Dumas located at the same place the chapelle_Champlain at it. This confusion is caused by the absence of the chapelle_Champlain on the plan of 1660, the latter being integrated in the fort of Huron destroys in 1668 (6). Thus, only two masonries are in the reserve of Ailleboust in 1660: the house of Jean Jobin and the boarding school of Martin Boutet.

In January 1673, Martin Boutet buys of Fabrique_Notre_Dame another ground close to his residence (7).

Notes:

(1) Martin Boutet of Saint Martin's day is a choirmaster, violonist, professor, soldier, tailor, carpenter (Seals, France, v. 1617 - Quebec, v. 1686). After engagehaving engaged, April 7, 1643 with LaRochelle, going to be used for Canada for three years like soldier and operation, he elected residence in Quebec about 1645. He left this city only for one stay in France (1677). Until the death of his wife (between 1661 and 1664), he seems to be attached to the garrison of strong Saint-Louis; it "was given" to the Jesuits then, acting by way of prosecutor. Inaugurating at the same time a course of mathematics to the college of the Jesuits, he cumulated the titles of professor of land surveying, of hydrography and of piloting, which were worth to him a patent of engineer (1678) decreed by Louis XIV. Artiste as much as engineer and scientist, Boutet was brought to play a role not less significant on the musical level, particularly at the time of the ceremonies of church. It is known that he played the violin at the Christmas Mass of 1645 and a celebrated wedding the same year. Cantor and Master of the children's chorus at the parish church of Quebec since 1651, it had to provide with office with the teaching of the reading, the writing, the plainsong and the ceremonies of the worship. He provides even the money necessary to the purchase of song books. It is known that one of the two children that he dealt with at that time, Louis Jolliet , became thereafter one of the first organists in News-France. It is probable that he could be initiated with the organ by Boutet. Charles-Amador Martin was also one of his pupils. Since 1656, Boutet acts as clerk of the Factory Our-Lady of Quebec. The historians did not fail to underline the invaluable services rendered to the colony incipient by this laic, first mathematics and schoolmaster, first secular cantor and first choirmaster. In 1958, a Boutet place located in the east of Montreal was named with its memory.

In 1634, it marries Guillaume Hébert, the only son of Louis Hébert and Marie Rollet (see Marie-Rollet ). Three children are born from this marriage: Joseph, Francoise and another who dies in low age. Become widowed in 1639, it convole with the cartwright Noël Morin (1616-1680) which becomes one of the pioneers of Montmagny .
