GCB,GCVO,OBE,QSO,PC. Baron Charteris of Amisfield.

A son of Hugo Charteris, Lord Elcho and a brother of the 12th Earl of Wemyss. He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He served in the King's Royal Rifle Corps in the Middle East during World War II, rising to the rank of Lieutenant-Col. He retired from the Army in 1951.

Married Hon.Mary Margesson (a daughter of the 1st Viscount Margesson) 16 Dec. 1944 with whom he had three children.

In 1950, he was appointed Private Secretary to Princess Elizabeth, then heir-presumptive to the throne. After her accession in 1952 until 1972, he served as her Asst. Private Secretary, promoted to Private Secretary in 1972, holding this position till 1977, when he returned to Eton as Provost.

He was created a life peer as Baron Charteris of Amisfield, of Amisfield in East Lothian in 1978.
