SQUIRE OR GENTLEMAN IN THE HOUSEHOLD OF JAMES V KING OF SCOTS

Martin Crichton, here treated, was appointed as a squire and gentleman in the household of James V, King of Scots, on 2 August 1526. His appointment was to last for his lifetime. RSS I: 3463 He was the son of James Crichton of Cranston-Riddell. NRS: GD328/30

On 20 February 1527 he had a precept of sasine for half the lands of Mychelstoun in the lordship of Weddale, resigned in his favour by Egidia Cranstoun, sister and heir of Patrick Cranston of Rochebyres, NRS: GD328/30 which lands he subsequently gave to James Hoppringle. His charter in Hoppringle's favour is dated 28 February 1528. NRS: GD328/30

Martin Crichton, here treated, is identified as the son of James Crichton of Cranston-Riddell in a precept of sasine in his favour dated 20 February 1527, NRS: GD328/30 and a charter in his favour dated 19 November 1535. NRS: GD328/30 His brother James succeeded to Cranston-Riddell before 19 November 1535, upon which date Martin is noticed as the brother german of James Crichton of Cranston-Riddell. Martin Crichton's elder brother, James Crechtoun of Cranstoun-Riddale, and his son and heir, also named James Crichton of Cranston-Riddell, both died before 4 August 1551, upon which date Martin Crichton is noticed as the heir of his nephew, the deceased James Crechtoun of Cranstoun-Riddale.
