The following information was provided by P. Cleveland Gardner, Cleveland County Historian. Quoting from the 1939 WPA Cemetery Census Records: "Martin Elliott was a soldier in the Revolutionary War; moved from Mecklenburg County, Virginia to Rutherford County, NC. In 1802, settled between First Broad River and Brushy Creek, south of Dover Mill, and now known as Cleveland County. He was buried there, and a Government Marker is erected at his grave in a few yards of his old home site. Martin Elliott was the progenitor of the Elliott family in Cleveland County, N.C."
