About Martin F Gaby, Sr.

From: <Spetry2@aol.com> To:
Sent: Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:31 PM Subject: [BRE] Martin Gaby - parents

I can confirm now that the parents of early Brethren minister, Martin
Gaby, were Ulrich and Maria Gabi of Oberbipp, Switzerland. The record of
Martin's baptism on May 6, 1742 is on microfilm # 2005651 from the Family
History Library. His record is on Page 10 of Part 2 of this film. The
baby's
name is written "Marti" as best as I can make out. The script on this
old
film is very hard to read. This is also confirmation that Martin was
born in
Switzerland, not in Germany as some have stated.

Gaby researchers have long speculated/assumed that this was the case, but
I
had not seen a source cited. Now I have seen the film.

Martin F. GABY SR. was born on 9 May 1742 in Germany. He died in Berks Co., Pennsylvania. Martin Gaby, husband of Conrad Price's oldest daughter, Susanna, was a Dunker, the name given to a baptist sect to distinguish them from Mennonites. a brief history of Pricetown PA mentions the German Baptist (Tunker) meeting house and the cemetery where its builder, Martin Gaby (Gaube) is buried. His grave stone is one of the few stones still legible. The Pricetown Meeting house also receives mention in the Brethren Encyclopedia. The meeting house is the oldest unaltered church building in the Brotherhood.on the land which he had purchased from Conrad Price.
A biography of Martin Gaube states that he was an early Brethren settler, and a leading figure in the Maiden Creek congregation, in the Oley region of Berks County, where he settled in 1766, near what came to be known as Pricetown. Martin became the minister of the congregation in 1770 and in 1780 was ordained elder. The meeting house is six miles northeast of Reading, PA. Martin's farmhouse is reportedly across the road from the meetinghouse.
