About Martin Quintus Gilfillan

Martin Quintus Gilfillan (1969 - 2004)

Brief overview:

Martin (35), was shot at point-blank range while he was sleeping in his Amberfield Heights Town House, in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion, on 2nd December 2004.

Constable DA Porter was investigating a housebreaking in Rooihuiskraal that night when he heard shots at the nearby Amberfield Heights. He saw two men running from the complex. He and another officer rushed to the scene. They could not find the criminals. They found Martin shot in his home. One of the security officers attempted to stop the bleeding, and Porter called emergency services. "I tried to contact them a few times and they took very long to get to the scene. It was about an hour, if not longer," Porter said. Martin lost consciousness and died before the paramedics arrived.

On the same night, Josias Cilliers, had a narrow escape, when he was in his townhouse, also in Amberfield Heights, when he heard shots being fired. He looked out of the window and saw a man standing near a wall. He shone a torch, and the perpetrator stood right in front of the window and fired a shot, which hit the bricks next to Josias's window.

Three weeks earlier, on November 11th, David du Toit, was shot was shot in the stomach and chest, at his home in the same complex. He was also sleeping at the time, and died in his bed after paramedics took over 50 minutes to arrive at the house.

The perpetrators, allegedly part of the same gang in all three incidents, appeared in court, before Judge Mahomed Ismail, on 11 charges. Billy Peter Mbewe (21), of Marabastad, and Jabu Nkosi (age unknown), of Driedoring plots, outside Pretoria - pleaded not guilty to all 11 charges, including two of murder, two of attempted murder and multiple charges of robbery and housebreaking.
