Martin Olof Nelson immigrated from Sweden in 1885. Martin was the only sibling in his family to immigrate to the United States. He immigrated with another family; he was in love with their daughter, Martha Catharina Englund. He married her and she died on January 15, 1891, shortly after their arrival in the United States.

Martin died from wounds incurred from being drug under a disc while farming. He was alone at the time, unknown if he fell or had a medical issue. His wife Olga found him and he was taken to the hospital in Thief River Falls, MN where he died.
