About Martin Sayes
Family tradition: Father of Martin Sayes came from England. About 1830 he died and several of the boys left the city when their mother married again. Three of them, Martin, Samuel, and John, went up to Ward One in Avoyelles. John never married. Samuel married but his children all died young. All Martin and "Millie" Aymond's children were born in an old log house within or or two miles from Winnfield, LA.
Martin Sayes was supposedly opposed to the Civil War so he when the fighting began in 1861 he sent Elijah Sayes and a son-in-law (Fouquier) up to Cairo, Illinois, to work in the boat yard. Martin reported that he spent the war building boats.
When the war ended, they came back south. In Vicksburg, his son-in-law became sick and died. He is buried there.
