Martin M Stanton

Martin (4) & Watt (1) (both born in Co Mayo, Ireland) stayed behind with their grandparents, Walter Stanton (1780-1855) and Mary Greavy (1794-1858), when their parents, John & Catherine, set sail for Canada. John purchased 100 acres (back Lot 24, Con 7, Fitzroy Twp) on Morris Island. While John was building the first log house, he and Catherine stayed with the William Dickson family on the 7th Line. That’s where Mary was born, the first born in Canada. The rest of the children were born on Lot 24.

Around 1850, Martin (15) and Watt (12) came to Canada and joined the family on Morris Island (where Vydon Acres currently is and Kingdon Mines was). The 1851 census lists John (34), Catherine (30), Martin (15), Walter (13), Mary (11), John (9), Austin (7), Sally (5) and Winnie (3) as living on Lot 24.
