Marutūāhu

The Hauraki region stretches from Mahurangi in the north to Ngā Kurī-a-Whārei (near Katikati) in the south. This region is dominated by the Marutūahu confederation of tribes, which are Ngāti Rongoū, Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Maru and Ngāti Pāoa.

Mt Moehau, at the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula, is a sacred mountain of the Marutūahu peoples; many important chiefs, including Tamatekapua of Te Arawa, are buried on its summit. The full name of the mountain is Te Moengahau-o-Tamatekapua (the windy sleeping place of Tamatekapua).

"Tamaterā was the second son of Marutūāhu and Paremoehau." (Ngāti Tamaterā & The Crown, 2017).
