  • 9. SIMON TUTTLE, bap. in New Haven, March 28, 1617, He appears in the list of proprietors of Wallingford in 1670, and had lot No. 13 with 8 acres of out land assigned to him. Dr. Savage (Gen. Dict.) says he did not stay long. He did not, in fact, take up his allotment and probably continued in New Haven until after the death of his mother, Dec., 1684.
  • He is on the list of proprietors of New Haven in 1680, and received his share in the 3d division, "two heads," showing that at that date he had a wife but no children. He was probably m. 1679 or 1680. In 1673 he is called of New Haven in an agreement for right of way, signed by Thomas, David, Benjamin, Jonathan, Simon and Nathaniel Tuttle. The original paper is now in possession of the family of the late Elihu Blake, Esq., of N. Hav., from which the facsimile of signatures was traced by his dau. Miss Emma L. Blake. In 1677-8 conv. to Benjamin Brockett, Cordwainer, "a part of land my father, Mr. William Tuttle, bought of John Punderson." In 1681 he conv. rt. in land on the west side of West river, in the 4th division. In 1683 he conveys house, barn and home lot, 5/8 of an acre, bounded on the east by Nathan Andrews west by the street, north by home lot formerly __ Johnson's, and south by Edward Dxisfont (?), to Richard Higginotbam of N. Hav. In these deeds he is called of N. Hav. In 1685, "Simon Tuttle of Wallingford, cooper," conv. his portion of the 3d division in N. Hav., thirty acres at Oyster Point, bounded on the west in part by the Milford line; receiving in exchange a lot adjoining the common on the east side. From these records it follows that he removed to Wall'd about 1685. Joseph P. Beach, Esq. of Cheshire, Conn., says; "SIMON TUTTLE, in the first lay out of Wall'd, in 'ye spring of 1670," had lot No. 13 on the east side of Main st. and lot 21 of the river lots, but Oct. 30, 1671, ' not possessing his lot and the river lot.' they were granted to Joseph Ives. In the 2d division in Wall'd, Dec. 27, 1686, Simon tuttle draws lot No. 52, and takes up 104 acres. In the Falls Plains, now Hanover or South Meriden division, Feb. 19, 1690, he gets lot No. 14. In the 3d division he gets 70 acres." 1686 Simon T. of Wall'd sells to Isaac Turner 6 acres "formerly belonging to my father, Mr. William Tuttle," bounded on the north by Nathaniel Tuttle, south by John Mix, east by East River meadow, west by county road. 1686 SIMON and David conv. to John Paine two parcels, 12 1/2 acres, lying together, east side of New Haven East river, 3d division. April 5, 1687, John and Samuel Todd, exrs. and sons of Christopher, confirmed an agreement made by said C. Todd in his lifetime with SIMON TUTTLE of Wall'd, for exchange of house and lands in Branford, owned by said Todd, 2 1/2 acres and house; also swamp land; also other parcels, 18 acres and 21 acres, for which SIMON TUTTLE gives lands in N. Hav. on west side of East river, 20 acres, bounded on the north by Jonathan Tuttle's land, on the south by Samuel Brown's home lot, on the east by Jonathan Tuttle's and land formerly belonging to Christopher Todd, and on the west by the highway. Also, 10 acres lying in Saxifrax Plains, bounded east by the river, north and west by Jonathan Tuttle's land, and south by Samuel Brown's land. Also, 6 acres bounded north by Samuel Brown's land, east by river and Jonathan Tuttle, and north and east by Jonathan Tuttle's home lot and part of the lot formerly Christopher Todd's, as also all the rest of my land, being about 60 acres, lying there, bounded on the east by the river, north by Samuel Brown's home lot, and south by Samuel Brown's land, together with half a house, etc., on aforesaid land; Samuel Munson, Martha Munson, wit. June 24, 1693, he appeared before John Moss in Wall'd and acknowledged conv. of land in New Hav. Neck to John Atwater. In 1701 rated at (english pound)79 on the Wall'd grand list. 1705 called SIMON TUTTLE, sr., of Wall'd, in conv. to Samuel Tuttle of "all my right to undivided lands in N. Hav.;" John Hall, Elizabeth Hall, wit. 1705 conv. to cousin Joshua Tuttle "all my right in Branford division set to my father, Mr. William Tuttle, now (Feb. 14, 1705) laid out for his children." He was appointed gauger and packer for the town of Wall'd. March, 1708-9, and at several times afterward. June 23, 1715, he gives to his son, Daniel, a house lot in Wall'd containing 1 1/2 acres, also, other lands. July 10, 1711, he gives to son, Timothy, the land, 9 1/2 acres, "I bought of Roger Tyler." He d. April 16, 1719. His wid., ABIGAIL,* d. Aug. 11, 1722.
  • I. Daniel, b. Nov. 11, 1680; m. Oct. 18, 1716, Ruth Howe.
  • II. Timothy, b. 1682, m. Nov. 2, 1706, Thankful Doolittle; (2) June 9, 1729, Mary Rowe, wid. of Stephen; (3) May 17, 1739, Mary Humiston; (4) June 28, 1749, Mrs. Sarah Humiston.
  • III. Abigail, m. June 5, 1706, Isaac Curtis.
  • IV. Thankful.
  • * I was early informed, on what seemed good authority, that the above ABIGAIL was the dau. of that name of Richard Beach, whose birth or bap., given by Dr. Savage in 1652. Joseph P. Beach, Esq., thinks that she could not have been a Beach. Richard's dau. Abigail is not mentioned in settlement of her father's estate. The point remains in uncertainty. _______________________

  • The Tuttle story is one of my qualifying stories for Rootsweb's International Black Sheep Society
  • After checking out the citations that people sent me, as much as I could get ahold of them, mostly TAG, and a couple of citations, I never did get ahold of the Prindle book, I found that documents such as wills establish that the Tuttles were of Northampton. My sources, as well as a summary of the disproven roots cited in older Tuttle genealogies in the United States, are below.

  • This is the true Tuttle lineage. The material is a little confusing.

  • Elizabeth may have been related to Robert Hill or to his first wife; they tried to get custody of the youngest stepchild from the second wife after her husband died, and she didn't particularly seem to want the child.
