Mary Bernadette Ladner Garey
Mary Bernadette Ladner Garey, 89, of Ojai, died Thursday, May 23, 2002. She was born Aug. 15, 1912 in Mobile, Ala., and spent most of her adult life as a resident of Mississippi. She had lived in Ojai since 1998.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, actress Diane Ladd and Robert C. Hunter; her granddaughter, actress Laura Dern and Ben Harper; stepchildren Amy and Milan Oleson, Emily Hunter and Brandon and Kristen Hunter; and two great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by granddaughter Diane Elizabeth Dern, and by her husbands, Daniel Garey and Preston Paul Ladner.
Mrs. Garey, a housewife by profession, had also appeared in several films as an actress and was on the cover of the London publication, Hello Magazine, and the book, "Mothers and Daughters," along with Diane and Laura, both Oscar nominees. She worked to protect stray dogs and cats and owned a Pomeranian and seven cats.
A private graveside service was held May 28 at the Santa Barbara Cemetery, with Father Virgil of the Old Mission Santa Barbara presiding, and a celebration of life memorial service was held in the city of Ojai.
Arrangements were under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
