Biography

Mary Page Merrow was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts December 7,1669, the daughter of Benjamin Page and Mary Whittier Page On her mother's side, she was the granddaughter of Thomas Whittier who had come from Southampton, England as a youth on the ship "Confidence". She was also a second cousin twice removed from John Greenleaf Whittier, the poet. [1]

Mary was married December 16, 1695 in Haverhill to Henry Merrow of Reading. After the wedding they returned to Reading and lived with Henry's mother and siblings. [2]

Their children, all born in Reading: [1]

  • Mary, born September 13, 1696; * Joseph, born August 1, 1698; * Benjamin, born May 9, 1700; * Jonathan, born January 1, 1702; * Ruth, born August 14, 1705; * Rachel, born May 9, 1707; * Samuel, born May 9, 1710;

In late 1720 or early 1721 the family moved to Oyster River (now Durham) New Hampshire. Samuel, who had been a farmer in Reading, now appeared as a physician and became known as "Doctor Samuel". [1]

In December, 1729 Samuel and Mary purchased land in the then frontier town of Rochester, however they did not relocate until 1733 after which they sold their property in Oyster River. Two of their sons also relocated to Rochester at about this time. [1]

The last record of Mary Page Merrow was April 20, 1738 when she and her husband sold land in Haverhill that she had inherited from her grandfather. [1]

No gravestones exist to provide us with dates of the death of either Mary or Samuel. They are probably buried on Meeting House Hill in Rochester, an old cemetery where most of the graves have only nameless field stones to mark them. [1]
