About Mary Bangs

Thomas married Mary Bangs, daughter of Jonathan Bangs and Mary Mayo, in Dec 1696 in Chatham, Barnstable co., Massachusetts. Mary was born on 14 Apr 1671 in Harwich, Barnstable co., Massachusetts, died in Oct 1736 in Chatham, Barnstable co., Massachusetts, at age 65, and was buried after Oct 1736 in Burial Hill, Chatham, Barnstable co., Massachusetts. Thomas and Mary settled at Cotchpinicut (Old Harbor), where Thomas held several offices, including selectman and town clerk. The Colony directed the village of Monomoit, where Thomas was born, to chose a "fit man" as a leader to form a military company in 1681. Thomas was chosen as a lieutenant of that military company in 1706, and his brother William was ensign. Mary joined the Harwich Church in November of 1708. Her husband and children were baptized there on 9 Oct 1709 by Rev. Nathaniel Stone. Thomas made out his will on 4 Aug 1735, dividing his properties among his children, and leaving his dwelling and furnishings, and the land, to his wife. Samuel Hinckley, the son of Mary's sister Lydia Bangs and her husband Shubael Hinckley, who had been raised by Thomas and Mary, was given the right to live there and manage it for her, and to inherit it as his own after her decease. His exact date of death isn't known, but his will was probated on 3 Aug 1736, about a year after it was written. Mary died two months later in Oct 1736. Both are buried at Burial Hill in Chatham.
