Mary Bardwell

A matter of importance to all descendants is the ancestry of Mary Gull, partly because Mary Gull was our ancestor and partly because direct search for documentation of Robert's father has been unavailing - as yet. Mary Gull has customarily been reported as dau. of Elizabeth Smith2 and her 2nd husband William Gull, as in Hook ("Lieut. Samuel Smith. His Children and One Line of Descendants and Related Families" pub 1953 p16). Hook shows p15 Elizabeth Smith b..England c1627 d.. prob. af 1701, m.1 1646 Nathaniel Foote Jr b..England c1620 d. Wethersfield CT 1655. Hook lists 4 chn born to Elizabeth and Nathaniel Foote 1648,1649,1652,1654. She m.2 William Gull (son of William p.43 this book), an early settler in Wethersfield who later moved to Hatfield MA where he d.1701. [1]

Mary Gull married Robert Bardwell on Nov. 29, 1676.[7] [8] Although "History of the Town of Whately" mentions that Mary was the widow of Nathaniel Foote, when she married Robert Boardwell, that is unlikely. Mary's mother, Elizabeth Smith, married a Nathaniel Foote as her first husband in 1646. There is no record of Mary also marrying a Nathaniel Foote.
