Daughter of John Baugh and Rachel Bailey
Mary Baugh Haslam was born in the small mining town named Old Park located in view of the mountain “Wrekin.” She was born March 20, 1825 and was christened on April 25, 1825 in Dawley-Magna, Shropshire, England. Her parents are John Baugh and Rachel Bailey. Mary was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on November 15, 1841
The John Baugh and Rachel Bailey family immigrated to America. At that time thousands of people immigrated to St. Louis City, St. Louis, Missouri. The Baugh family was in St. Louis during the 1840s. Some of the boats coming there had passengers who were ill. There was an outbreak of cholera, the bacterial abdominal infection spread mainly through water contaminated by human waste. Hundreds of people died from the infection. Mary’s mother, Rachel, died on November 13, 1846.
Mary Baugh married James Holt Haslam on April 10, 1847 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Their first child was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States on June 4, 1848 They named her Mary Alice. She was blessed by Thomas Hall. She died in Cincinnati June 17, 1848 when she was thirteen days old.
There was a cholera epidemic in St. Louis in 1849. At least, 4,317 people died of cholera that year in St. Louis. There were so many deaths some had to be buried in ditches. Mary’s father, John, died on June 16, 1849. James Holt Haslam’s mother, Alice Young, and his sisters, Alice and Elizabeth, died in June 1849 in St. Louis, also.
