John Bickley, was born December 7, 1713 in King and Queen County, VA. His will was probated in Amherst County, Sep 16, 1793.
John was one of six sons of Joseph Bickley of Stratton-Major Parish, King and Queen County, and his wife Sarah Shelton Gissage, who were married in March 1704 [sic]. She was the widow of, first, a Mr. Shelton and second Richard Gissage.
John Bickley married first, Mary Hurt, and lived in Louisa Co, Virginia; .
He married 2nd second, Mrs. Susannah Harding Ellis, widow of Charles Ellis of "Red Hill," Amherst County, Virginia. who died August 14, 1760.
John married Susannah February 6, 1769 and went to live at "Red Hill" where he is buried.
By his first wife he had issue: Charles, William, Joseph, Elizabeth Coleman, Mary Ann Carter, Jane Holland, Humphrey, Matilda, Hannah, James, and Frances. By his second wife he had a daughter, named Mildred.

in the Genealogies of Virginia Families, Vol. 1, page 135-137, the following is stated about John Bickley: "They were a generation of small farmers. It was John Bickley, born on Dec. 7, 1713, who continued the westward progress of the Bickleys in Virginia. He was the third son of the original Joseph; his first wife, whom he married April 14, 1736, was Mary Hurt of Louisa County, and his second was Susannah Harding, widow of Charles Ellis of Red Hill, Pedlar River, Amherst County. Ellis died May 4, 1759 on December 21, 1767, Susannah Ellis became Mrs. John Bickley. Bickley received her dowry, and a tract of the Ellis plantation and the mansion house in dower right: 143 acres of land in Amherst County, on the south side and joining of Pedlar River. John and Susannah Bickley lived at Red Hill for the rest of their lives. Bickley is listed in the Virginia Census of 1783 as "John Beckley", owner of five slaves.(U.S. Dept. of Commerce and Labor. Bureau of the Census, "Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States, Washington D.C., 1900, pp. 48, 82, 112).
in his will he left house and furniture to his wife, and to his children 325.17.6 pounds plus the slaves, Isaac, Arthur, Silvey, Oney, and Bartlett together worth 170 pounds.
He died in 1793 and is buried at Red Hill".
