Her father was not documented and her mother was unmarried. She was baptized under her mothers maiden name of Turner.
She came to New Zealand in 1865 with her mother, step-father, brother and half brother, another half brother was born at sea in 1865 en route to New Zealand.
She was raised under the surname of Suckling (believed to be her paternal father's surname).
Mary Ann Suckling is acknowledged as a step-daughter in John Jackson Deed's probate file. She is also mentioned in the probate file of her mother Frances Elizabeth, but it does not reveal who her father was.
