Another John Brown called "the glazier" and "the drummer," of about the same age, a resident in Ipswich, has been confused with the John Brown, son of John, whom we are now considering. It is necessary to establish the identity of each of them at the outset.
The Town Records contain the birth entries:
- Elizabeth, daughter of John, born April 15, 1664.
- John, son of John, born Sept. 29, 1666.
- Jonathan, son of John, born Nov. 4, 1668.
- Sarah, daughter of John born Dec. 2, 1670.
- Hannah, daughter of John, the glazier, born Nov. 13, 1676.
John Brown, the glazier, had wife Mary, in 1668. On April 22, 1668, John Brown, glazier, his wife, Mary, releasing right of dower, sold two divisional lots in Plum Island to Francis Wainwright (23:70). On March 20, 1674–5, he sold his house on High St., in Ipswich, to Thomas Lull and Robert Paine, his wife, Mary, signing release (Ips. Deeds, 3: 335).
John, the glazier, was a notorious drunkard. The Town authorities ordered him not to frequent any of the ordinaries "as he neglects his vocations and spends much time and expense” (1672) and the Ipswich Court ordered, “No person whatsoever shall sell or give unto John Brown the glazier, any strong drink etc.” This notice was to be posted at the meeting house and ordinaries, 1679. (Court Papers, Vol. XXXI: 19.) The Grand Jury presentment calls him John Brown, the drummer (XXXI: 18.) At the same Court, John Brown, son of John, was released from paying extra money to his sisters and mother. The term, glazier, is used to distinguish the tippler from the farmer.
A neighborhood scandal on High Street arose in 1682. John Brown, aged 44, and Mary his wife, testified; also Elizabeth Brown and Mary Brown aged 19. (Court Papers, Vol. XXXVII: 89.) The Grand Jury made presentment against Mary Brown and Elizabeth, the glazier's daughters, for arranging their hair too showily and wearing silk scarfs, April 14, 1682. (Court Papers, Vol. XXXVII: 116.)
In 1690, he was before the Court again for his evil habits and on March 29, 1692, John Brown, the glazier, was presented for being a common drunkard, and for throwing a fire brand at his wife, which struck her on the thigh. (Court Papers, Vol. LII: 112.)
These citations establish the fact that Elizabeth born 1664, the first of the children named' was the daughter of John, the glazier and Mary, that Hannah, born in 1676, was the daughter of the glazier, that Mary was his wife in 1682 and that all the children named above were of this family. The deposition of Nathaniel Brown already quoted, made on April 2, 1679, affirmed that his father made objection not long before his death to his brother John's marriage with the woman, "which is now my brother John's wife.”
