Biographical Summary:
Mary Elizabeth Howard (1827-1903) was born in Worcester, England on August 5th 1827 to Robert Howard and Letitia Freeman Howard. She immigrated to America and crossed the plains in 1854 with the Daniel Garn Company. She was from a well-to-do family and when asked why she always wore silk dresses on the trail, she replied that they were the only kind she had. She became acquainted with William Furlsbury Carter while crossing the plains. He was on his way home from a mission to India. At first the captain of the wagon train had objected to his joining them. William had recently suffered an illness and appeared to be in poor health. It was at her intercession that William was accepted on the journey. She was reported to have asked, "Why can't we take that old man along with us?" Being skilled in blacksmithing, William was able to repair several wagons and shoo the horses on the journey to the satisfaction of all involved.
A friendship developed between these two Saints and they were married in the Salt Lake Endowment House on September 10, 1854. Mary Elizabeth was 27 years old and William was 43 years old. Elizabeth then proceeded with her new husband to Provo to meet Sarah York and Roxena Mecham, William's second and third wives and the children he had not seen for almost two years. (Cordelia Hannah Mecham, William's first wife, had died in 1830. He later married Sally Ann Mecham, sister to Roxena Mecham, in 1857.)
Elizabeth had seven children and spent most of her life raising her family and moving from Santaquin, Mona, Goshen, Benjamin, and Nephi as her husband pursued money business, blacksmithing, farming, threshing, shop-keeping, furniture building and his work for the Church for the Perpetual Immigration Co.
Elizabeth was loved by all who knew her and worked around her. She was very strong-willed, and had a very strong testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elizabeth was not afraid to fight for what was right. She died September 1st 1903 and is buried in Santaquin, Utah next to her husband.
