About Mary Ann Cary
Mary Ann Shadd Cary was an American-Canadian anti-slavery activist, journalist, publisher, teacher, and and one of the first black lawyers in the U.S. She was the first Black woman publisher in North America and the first woman publisher in Canada.
She taught school in Chatham, ON, Canada, and became a journalist, taking over the Provincial Freeman in Windsor, ON, Canada. She was the eldest of 13 children of Abraham Shadd and Harriett Parnell.
Shadd Cary also assisted Osborne Perry Anderson in the writing of A Voice from Harper's Ferry.
