Mary Chapman, daughter of Thomas Chapman (d. Aft 1724) and Mary Craxon, was born before 1690, and died before 24 Oct 1748 in Dettingen Parish, Prince William County, Virginia.

She married first to Francis Purnell (b. Bef. 1687 - d. Bef Aug 1726) before 1706.

  • Will of Mrs. Mary Ashmore of Prince William County, VA.
  • In the name of God Amen I Mary Ashmore of the Parish of Ditengen & County of Prince William widow being very sick & weak in body but of sound Mind & perfect memory thanks be to God for it and calling to mind the mortality of all flesh and knowing that it is appointed by Almighty God for all people once to die Do make & appoint this my last will and testament in manner and form following Viz: First of all I give and bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God that Gave it me and my body to the earth to be buried in a christian like & decent manner at the discretion of my executors hereafter mentioned and as for my wordly estate where with it hath pleased God to bless me with I bestow and dispose of in the following manner Viz:
  • Item: I give and bequeath to my well beloved Grandson Francis Purnell one negro winch named Sarah and her child named Peter to him and his heirs forever only his father John Chapman Purnell to have the use of them during his natural life. Item: I give and bequeath to my well beloved son John Chapman Purnell my own riding horse.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to my well beloved son William Ashmore two thousand Pounds of Crop Tobacco, own large looking glass and all the chiny wate belonging to my house.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to my Dear & Well beloved Daughter Mary Cannon the now wife of Luke Cannon all my wearing cloths and one suit of mourning cloth.
  • Item: I give and bequeath five slaves namely, Philis, Hannah, Luce, Ben and Nann and their increase to be equally divided between the children of Mary Cannon the now wife of Luke Cannon after her Decease that is to say my will and meaning is that she should have the work of them During her natural life.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to my well beloved Grandaughter Edith Cannon the first child that the negro wench Sarah shall bring hereafter that shall live to the age of one full year my will and meaning is the first child that wench brings hereafter which I bequeath to my Grandson Francis Purnell.
  • Item: My will and meaning is that all the rest of my Estate to be sold at a Publick Sale for money At 18 months creadit to be equally Divided amongst the children of Mary Cannon to be paid them when they come to age or at the Day of Marriage by my Executors in whose hands it is to be lodged till the time appointed for Payment.
  • Item: I give and bequeath to my Dear and well beloved son John Chapman Purnell one negro man named Whitchaven and ten Pounds currency. Also I Make ordain constitute and appoint my well beloved sons John Chapman and William Ashmore my Executors of this my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th Day of October 1748. her

  • This will was Presented in Court by John Chapman Purnell and William Ashmore Executors herein named who made oath hereto and the same being also proved by the oaths of the witnesses it is admitted to record and the said Executors having performed what is usual in such cases a Certificate is Granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
