About Mary Charleton
There are several versions of this marriage, and of who she was, in the Visitations of Shropshire and elsewhere.
Under "Charlton of Apley Castle and Withyford" is written "Rob'tus Charleton de Apeley ob. 10 E[dward] 4 (Sheriff 1472)" married "Maria filia de Rob'ti Corbet de Morton Ar.[Esq.]"
Under "Charlton of Apley" it is said "Rich. Charlton of Apley" [son of Robert Charlton and Anne Manwaring] married "Alice da. to Robt. Corbett of Morton Esq."
The Corbet pedigree is excruciatingly difficult to follow because it has so many branches, but on p. 135 we find: "Rob'tus Corbet obijt ao 17 H. 6 [i.e. 1438/9]" marrying "Margareta filia Will'i Mallory militis" - which fits neither of the known parties of Moreton Corbet, as Robert died in 1420 and Margaret was *not* born a Mallory - she *married* Sir William Mallory of Papworth as her second husband; sons Thomas (d.s.p) and Roger, plus assorted untrustworthy listings of daughters there may not have been time for; and "Maria uxor Rob'ti Charlton de Apley in co. Salop". Robert's younger brother Roger is *not* listed, but two sisters (not known from other sources) *are*.
One of the problems is that half of the Corbet men seem to have been named Robert (and half of the rest, Roger).
The Mallory side of the story is infuriatingly elusive, and has to be reconstructed from assorted legal records.
It should also be noted that the Shropshire Visitations are among the *least* reliable and *most* error-riddled.
