  • 11. THOMAS CHARLTON, of Apley (in Wellington), Shropshire, son and heir, born about 30 March 1394 (aged 22 in 1416). He was co-heir in 1399 to his uncle, Thomas de Cherleton, and sole heir in 1413 to his aunt, Ellen de Cherleton. He married CECILY FRAUNCEYS, daughter of Robert Fraunceys, Knt., of Foremark, Derbyshire, Knight of the Shire for cos. Derby and Stafford, Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, 1406-7, by his wife Isabel (?Peshale). They had one son Robert, Esq. In 1419 he granted land at Haughton and Trilwardine, Shropshire to William Knightley and his wife, Elizabeth. In 1439 he granted land at Haughton and Trilwardine, Shropshire to Christopher Talbot, Robert Harcourt, and Robert Charlton. THOMAS CHARLTON died 4 Jan. 1460.

Robert Charlton of Apley was grandson of William Knightley, a younger son of the house of Fawsey, Northamptonshire, by Anne de Charleton, his wife, sister and heiress of Thomas de Charleton of Apley, grandson of Alan de Charleton, who, in 1327, had license to embattle his manor house of Apley and Withyford, which last, together with Ashton Aer, he obtained in marriage with Margery, the heiress of Hugh Fitz-Aer [British Families, Notable British Families, 1600s-1900s (FTM CD #367), CD-ROM (Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Dictionary of New England), Includes "Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England."
