Source: John Howland of the Mayflower Vol. 3, First Five Generations Through Daughter Hope; by Elizabeth Pearson White, 2008, pg 513: James Chipman, Mary's father, did not leave a will, but proof that Mary belongs in this family is found in the close relationship between Mary and her brother, Benjamin Chipman, who has been shown to have been a brother of James, Perez, John and Stephen Chipman, all children of James and Mary (Minor) Chipman, all of whom settled in Delaware. Benjamin Chipman was appointed by Mary's second husband, Thomas Dunning, as an appraiser of his estate. Benjamin also witnessed Thomas's will, 15 April 1771. On 13 May 1771, Mary's brothers, Benjamin Chipman & Perez Chipman signed her bond of 500 pounds as executrix of her husband, Thomas Dunning's will. Mary's son, Reuben Shield, witnessed Benjamin Chipman's will, 19 April 1772, and her son, Thomas Dunning, was the bondsman for the widow of Benjamin Chipman's son, Stephen Chipman, 23 Jan 1793.

Children, first two probably born in Groton but recorded with their third child in Stonington, CT; fourth and fifth probably born in New London but not recorded there; sixth, seventh and eighth probably born in Smithtown, Long Island, NY, order of last five uncertain.
