The Tasmanian Exhibition of 1891-92 and the Launceston Family Album Project

International Exhibition HallThe Tasmanian Exhibition of 1891-92 was the biggest event ever held in Launceston. An Exhibition souvenir card shows the city’s iconic Albert Hall. It was purpose built for the Exhibition, as were the annexes holding the displays mounted by exhibitors from all the Australian colonies, Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, the United States and New Zealand - 1372 in all.

The Exhibition, staged at a total cost of £14,480, was widely promoted as a trade fair, cultural exhibition and expression of community achievement. It opened on November 25 1891 and ran until the following March. It attracted 262,059 visitors (Launceston’s population at the time was only 17,248).

Sample Passport ScanSeason tickets to the Exhibition were issued at a cost of two guineas for gentlemen, one guinea for ladies and 10/6 for children under fourteen. They also gave admission to the opening ceremonies, concerts and oratorios. A photograph was mounted on the season ticket which was effectively a passport for admission.

The official photographer for these passports was Richard Nicholas. He kept a master set of passport photographs in a large album which remarkably survived. It became the focus of the Launceston Family Album project.

The album provides an unusually representative photographic record of the city’s men, women and children at that time. Its limitation, as mentioned before, is that it usually includes only the names (surname and initial) of the subjects, and no further information about them.

Exhibition AlbumThe Friends of the Library Launceston, through a Tasmanian Community Fund grant, made a set of digital images and created an interactive website to enable members of the public to identify and provide information on those people who appeared in the album. Everyone was invited to join in a detective story. The challenge was to find out who these people were, what their part in creating the heritage of Launceston was, where they lived, what their stories were, who their descendants were.

The interactive website was developed and hosted by Hobart IT firm Future Medium from 2006 to 2012. The project was supported by Launceston’s Examiner newspaper, which in 2006-8 printed a weekly series of over 100 stories about families and notable individuals. Members of the public contributed a great deal of information over a six-year period.

Members of Friends of the Library and Library staff also tried to identify photographs and provide background information on those featured in the Album. For many people, the photograph is the only known image that has survived on public record. Many of those in the album are from notable families, but season tickets were also held by members of the choir and orchestra, and exhibitors from interstate.

Apart from the Launceston Family Album website, there have been two other outcomes from the project. In 2007 an archival volume containing the 100 people or families featured in the Examiner were produced. It was launched at a reception in the Town Hall by the Governor of Tasmania at the time, William Cox, who had contributed information to the project about his forebears. (Copies of this volume are unfortunately no longer available.) In 2010 a two-CD set of images and information about the Exhibition was produced by Gould Genealogy. It has a much fuller account of the Exhibition and of the Family Album project, and includes all the portraits of the ticket holders and the information collected on them to that time. This is available from the Friends of the Library, Launceston Inc. PO Box 607, Launceston TAS 7250 at a cost of $24.50, plus $4.50 packaging and posting.

Our project is continuing to gather family history data on the people who had season tickets to the Exhibition. If you have information you would like to contribute please email us at launcestonfamilyalbum@gmail.com.
