Mary Clarke, here treated, is said to be the daughter of Jeremiah Clark and his wife Frances Latham. She is reported to have married twice; first to John Cranston, Governor of Rhode Island, son of the Reverend James Cranston (chaplain to King Charles I); and second John Stanton. The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. 1920. Volume LXXIV (Part I), p. 134. For an account of the Clarke family see pp. 130-34

Mary Clarke was born 12 March 1640/41 at Newport, Rhode Island Colony. She was a daughter of Frances (Latham), of Bedfordshire, and Jeremy Clarke (bef.1605-abt.1652), of Kent, England.
Mary Clarke married first, about 3 Jun 1658 at Newport, John Cranston (1625-1680), one of the earliest settlers of the Rhode Island Colony, and its future Governor.
They may have had at least 10 children, however source documentation on several of those currently attached is weak. These appear to be supported with credible sourcing:
Samuel Cranston (1659-1727)
Caleb Cranston (abt.1662-abt.1700)
Elizabeth (Cranston; 1671-); married John Brown
William Cranston (abt.1672-bef.1697)
John Cranston (1675-1751)
Following the death of John, Mary married the widower Captain John Stanton, with whom she had one more child, Henry Stanton, Sr. (1688 - 1751) [1].
Mary (Clarke) (Cranston) Stanton died 1 Apr 1711 at Newport. Her grave is in Common Burying Ground, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, United States [2]. Notably, the header panel of this online site indicates the middle name Latham in context. No middle name appears on the grave marker. No evidence of any middle name for this person has been put forth from any other source. The application of middle names was rare during the timeframe that Mary lived.
