There has been confusion on who Mary, wife of Robert Combs b.1704-05 is. Court:
1 Dec 1732, Will of Thomas Morrell, Hopewell, Hunterdon Co,NJ, mentions wife Mary, children: Martha, Mary, Hannah, Abigail, John Daniel, and an unborn child. This Mary was his wife not his daughter. 24 Jan 1734, account of Robert Combs and his wife Mary, executrix Thomas Morrell. Executors were wife Mary, Benjamin Herson and Andrew Smith.

Will: Mary Roberts, relict of Jonathan Roberts of Trenton, Hunterdon Co,NJ mentions daughter Mary, wife of Robert Combs. dated 8 Feb 1740.

JBR notes: I have rec'd a letter from a Combs researcher in 1995/6 telling me that 'Martha was NOT A COMBS COMBS, but was Robert Combs stepdaughter, the daughter of his wife by her first husband, Thomas Morrell.

When I asked about this on the Combs-L Rootsweb, web leader Carol hotly denied it. The cause of confusion is obvious after reading above. Thomas Morrell's widow Mary Roberts did indeed marry Robert Combs. And, apparently, Mary Roberts had a Morrell daughter named Martha as well as a Combs daughter named Martha. Very odd and confusing. One suggestion.... Could Mary Roberts Morrell Combs have been Thomas Morrell's SECOND WIFE? That would explain quite a lot including the oddity of naming her oldest and youngest daughters by two different husbands 'Martha'. Suggest checking for earlier marriage record for Thomas Morrell....

11/20/98 WFT Vol 22 found Roberts in Culpepper Co, VA very early....one female birth, Jane Roberts, in 1729, father's name Francis Roberts. Jane married Raleigh Duncan in Culpepper Co, VA and they had a large family.
