About Mary Cutler

From https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=168193277

Mary was the wife of Thomas King of Watertown and Lancaster, Mass., and later the wife of James Cutler of Watertown, Cambridge, and Lexington, Mass. Her maiden name was NOT Barnard. It was a different, and younger, Thomas King who was associated with the Barnard family (see Anderson, Sanborn, and Sanborn, Great Migration, v. IV, p 170). The Thomas King whose widow married James Cutler had no known association with the Barnard family. Mary's birth year is an approximation based on her first marriage year of about 1639 (child born 1640). Her death year is based on her husband having a child with his next wife in about 1661. As to the death date of 7 Dec 1654 ascribed to Mary, Anderson, Sanborn and Sanborn, in the Great Migration Series, call this date "suspiciously similar to the date of death of Thomas King, her first husband."

Mary was married first, about 1639, to Thomas KING, who was born about 1615 (aged 19 in 1634), and who died December 1644. Her husband was involved in mining operations, and was a carpenter. Following his death, Mary was married in Watertown 9 March 1644/5 to James CUTLER, b. c. 1606, d. 1694. Mary had children with both of her husbands; they were:

Children of Mary and Thomas KING, b. Watertown:

  • Thomas, b. 16:1mo:1640 (16 March 1639/40), d. Watertown 28:10mo:1644 (28 Dec 1644).
  • Mary, b. 2:12mo:1641 (2 Feb 1641/2), m. Watertown 19 Oct 1659 John JOHNSON.
  • Hannah, b. c. 1644, m. c. 1662 John WINTER.

children of Mary and James CUTLER:

  • Elizabeth, b. Watertown 22 July 1646, living in 1719, m. c. 1667 John PARMENTER, b. c. 1640, likely in Sudbury, Mass. where his father was an early settler, d. Sudbury 18 Sep 1719, the son of John Parmenter and Amy Ames. John's will was dated 28 Nov 1712, naming wife Elizabeth and children, and his widow Elizabeth acknowledge the will of her deceased husband on 10 Nov 1719. Five children have been identified, born 1668 to 1685. FAG memorials have been created for Elizabeth and John.
  • Thomas, b. say 1648, m. by 1674 Abigail _______, b. c. 1646, d. Lexington, MA 19 Feb 1711 [/12?], aged 65. Seven children have been identified, born 1674 to 1697. Abigail has an extant grave marker in the Old Burying Ground in Lexington.
  • Sarah, b. c. 1653, d. Weston, MA 17 Jan 1743/4, aged 89 years (GM 2:270) or d. 19 Jan 1743/4 per the Lexington vital record. She m. c. 1674 Thomas WAITE, b. Watertown, Mass. 3 (1) 1641 (3 March 1641), d. Lexington 3 Jan 1722/3 or 3 Feb 1722/3, the son of Richard Waite and Mary Mills. They had nine known children born 1675 to 1697. Sarah and Thomas are buried in the Old Burying Ground in Lexington, Mass., but only Thomas has an extant grave marker.

Mary was born about 1630 in Watertown MA or Dorset, England, and died Dec 1654 in Sudbury, MA, buried in Cambridge Farms, now Lexington.

Mary was previously married to Thomas King. Thomas had died December 3, 1644 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, leaving her with three children by their marriage.

She then married James Cutler March 9, 1645 in Lexington, Middlesex, Massachusetts, who had four children by previous marriage to Anna Cakebread. Anna had died September 30, 1644.

James Cutler buried his first wife, Anna, September 30, 1644, and married, second, March 9, 1645, Mary, widow of Thomas King. She died December 7, 1654, and he married his third wife, Phoebe, daughter of John Page, about 1662. Mr. Cutler was too remote from Watertown, and especially from Cambridge, to have admitted of his serving in town affairs in either place.

James Cutler married (2) Mary (____) King, widow of Thomas King. (Paige claims she died at Cambridge Farms, 7 Dec 1654, which is suspiciously similar to the date of death of Thomas King, her 1st husband.)

They had 3 children: Elizabeth Parmenter, Thomas, & Sarah Waite.

Two of the heirs listed in the 2nd half of James Cutler's 1684 will were the children of his 2nd wife, Mary (____) King, with her 1st husband. In the case of Mary Johnson, we have both a birth record & a marriage record which call her Mary King. In the case of Hannah Winter, there are no such records, unfortunately, but we still conclude that she was born King and not Cutler
