"The Burton Chronicles" page 133 Mary, who was the eldest daughter of John Burton, married about 1668 John Davis of Henrico, the son of that John Davis who had been settled next to Longfield since 1637. The Henrico Minute Book for August 1684 records: "Upon the petition of Mrs. Mary Davis order for commission of administration is granted her on the estate of her husband John Davis, dec'd." It thus appears that Mary's husband died early in 1684; she soon thereafter married William Glover, as appears from another entry in the Minute Book at page 193; "Court August 1, 1685, the suit commenced by Will Glover as marrying ye relict of John Davis dec'd plt. Against Bartho. Burroughs, deft. By John Davis Mary had two sons and two daughters, John, Will, Elizabeth and Mary, three of whom are mentioned in the will of their grandfather, John Burton. William Glover was Justice of the Peace from 1685 and a leading lawyer of Henrico. By him Mary had no children. This probable Captain Thomas Davis who came in 1623 descendants

Mary (Burton) Davis Glover [3560.5]

Married (1) John Davis and (2) William Glover.

Children with John Davis: John Davis III, William, Elizabeth, Mary.

Mary Burton, daughter of John Burton of “Longfield,” married John Davis about 1668. It was possibly this John Davis who joined Edward Hatcher and Thomas Sheppey on a “voyage to trade among the Indians” in 1681.

John Davis appeared in the Henrico County tithable list of 1679 made to comply with “An act for the defence of the country against the incursions of the Indian Enemy.”

John Davis was dead by 9 October 1684 when the court granted Mary rights to administer his estate. Mary’s father identified her three youngest children in his will and the division of Davis’ estate in 1692 identified all four.

Mary married William Glover by 1 August 1685 when “Will Glover as marrying ye relict of John Davis, dec’d” sued Bartholomew Burrows. The Henrico County Orphans Court summoned Glover to offer new security for the Davis orphans 20 August 1685 but the next month the individual Glover chose to secure his guardianship was sick.

Yet in August 1684 she was still Mrs. Mary Davis when the court judged her servant, Philip Purcell, to be thirteen years of age, and her Indian girl, Kate, to be fifteen.

Glover was a justice of the peace from 1685. In 1691 he had a patent for land next to his stepson John Davis and his brother-in-law Robert Burton.

The Glovers left the county by 1691. William must have died soon afterwards for Mary inventoried his estate 22 December 1691.

Glover’s departure from the county not only left a vacancy in the troops for defense, it apparently also diminished the supply of weapons. Capt. William Randolph, the commander on the north side of the James River, ordered the person who inherited the arms to dispose of them to a trooper on the north side of the river.
