Mary Elizabeth Spendlove

Mary Elizabeth Spendlove St. Clair was born in Cosby, Leicestershire, England to John and Elizabeth Harrison Spendlove. Mary's mother died when she was four years old. Her father remarried to Marie Tole in 1852. In the spring of 1862 Mary boarded the John J. Boyd along with some family friends and emigrated to the United States. She arrived in New York City then boarded a train to St Jospeph Missouri and then traveled by boat to Florence, Nebraska. In Florence she joined a pioneer company headed by John R. Murdock and began the journey across the plains to Utah arriving in Salt Lake City September 27, 1862. She married George St. Clair some time between 1864 and 1867. Ten children were born to them, six of which lived to adulthood. After living in Salt Lake area, Ogden and possibly Corinne the family settled in Ophir, Utah in the early 1870s. There they raised their children. Mary lived to the age of 83. Her last wish was to be buried in the old Ophir cemetery next to her husband, but as that had been discontinued as a burial ground she was buried in the Tooele City Cemetery.
