About Mary Erskine, Countess of Glencairn
MARY ERSKINE (aka MARIE ERSKINE or JEAN ERSKINE)
Mary Erskine is the daughter of John, Earl of Mar, and his second wife Lady Jean Mackenzie. The Scots Peerage, V, p, 626 She was born before 2 February 1657, the date upon which her baptism was registered at Alloa in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. Her baptismal record reads as follows: "To the Right Noble Lord, John Earle of Marr a daugr callit Marie witness Mr James Cunningha[m] and George Mastertoune". [National Records of Scotland, Alloa Baptisms, 1609-90, reference OPR.465/1] Image of her Baptismal Record
Marriage
In volume five of the Scots Peerage Mary Erskine is reported to have married John Cunningham, Earl of Glencairn. The Scots Peerage, V, p, 626 This is confirmed by the transcript of their ante-nuptial contract of marriage which has been published by the National Records of Scotland. NRS: GD124/3/62 In volume four of the Scots Peerage, John, Earl of Glencairn is said to have married Jean Erskine, daughter of John, tenth Earl of Mar, but it would now seem that this was an error. The Scots Peerage, IV, p. 250
