Mary Erskine, Countess Marischal

Not the same as Mary Erskine

PATRICK MAULE, 1st. Earl of Panmure. b. 1585: d. 1661. His third wife was Lady Mary widow of William, 6th Earl Marischal, dau. of John Erskine, 2nd Earl of Mar. They had no children.

“Mary, Countess Marischal and her son, John by George Jamestone, 1625.” By 1626, when George Jamesone's portrait was commissioned, Lady Mary Erskine was twenty nine years old, and had already been married an incredible seventeen years. She was the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Mar, who was High Treasurer of Scotland and a friend of King James VI and I. In 1609, aged only twelve, she married William Keith, 5th Earl Marischal, and went on to have four children.

Lady Mary Erskine was born in 1597. She was the daughter of John Erskine, 18th/2nd Earl of Mar and Lady Mary Stewart.1 A contract for the marriage of Lady Mary Erskine and William Keith, 5th Earl Marischal was signed on 12 October 1609.1 She died after 1626.

Lady Mary Erskine was also known as Margaret. Her married name became Keith. Children of Lady Mary Erskine and William Keith, 5th Earl Marischal
