[St Margaret's Church, Church Lane, Barming, Maidstone, Kent, ME16 9HA 51.2612538, 0.4639117] Barming. Fashionable Marriage. — On Thursday morning, 20 May 1886, Barming was astir on the occasion of the marriage of the rector's eldest daughter (Miss Mary Joanna Sophia Carr), with Mr. Walter Hepburn FitzHerbert, of [The Hall, Somersal Herbert, Derbyshire DE6 5PD 52.91471, -1.80085]. The bridesmaids were Miss Laura Carr and Miss Margaret L Carr (sisters of the bride), Miss Adine Wright, and Miss Ida Bill (nieces of the bridegroom); and the best man, Mr. Norman FitzHerbert, brother of the bridegroom.
The service was performed by the father of the bride, the Rev. T. W. Carr, and the sacred edifice had been beautifully decorated by friends of both the bride and bridegroom. A floral design with the words, "God Bless them Both," was placed in a very conspicuous position.
The bride's wedding dress was of ivory satin, while the wreath which she wore was of real orange blossom and myrtle. The bridesmaids, too, were beautifully dressed, the skirts being of cream-coloured silk, trimmed with Chinese crape, and each wore a splendid gold brooch with the monogram, "W. M." (Walter and Mary), the gift of the bridegroom. The bride was given away by Mr. John Deacon, of Mapleton, near Tonbridge.
The church was crowded during the interesting ceremony, and the heartiest good wishes were expressed towards the bride and her husband. At the conclusion of the ceremony the company, to the number of about 70 adjourned to the house of the bride's father, where an elegant wedding breakfast was partaken of. The presents numbered about 140.
