Mary Ann Redman Gabel
Topeka - Mary Ann Redman Gabel, 78, Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Ann was born January 8, 1943, in Topeka, the daughter of Joseph and Doris LoRene Voigt Redman. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1961, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Washburn University and a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas.
On January 26, 1967, Mary Ann and Edwin Paul Gabel were united in marriage, enjoying 39 years together until his death October 26, 2006.
Mary Ann was an employee of the State of Kansas for 25 years; 20 of those years she served as Executive Director of Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board.
Public service was a large part of Mary Ann's dedication to her community. She donated countless hours through and received recognition for her participation in; the SPEC programs, won the Outstanding Service Award for the Kansas Association of Professional Psychologists, won a Service Award for the National Committee for Employer Support, Kansas National Guard and Army Reserves, received the Outstanding Service Award for the Kansas Society of CPAs and served on the League of Women Voters of Kansas. She was a member of Pi Alpha Alpha Honor Society, volunteered at Old Prairie Town, and was a member of the Topeka Crochet Guild making innumerable items including blankets for infants, angel babies, cancer patients and veterans. She had served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Topeka Daycare Association and Social Work Community Advisory Board at Washburn University. She was a member of Diva Dinner Gals and Dover Card Group. Mary Ann was a longtime member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Grateful to have shared her life are Mary Ann's children, Joseph Gabel (Shannon), Angela "Tweetie Bird" Gabel, Rose Mary Isaac (Ernie) and Daniel Gabel (Tammy); 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son, Tom, grandchildren, Timmy and Briar and countless pets but especially, Macadoodle.
Mary Ann was a second mother to her children's friends, who were always welcome in her home. She was a gracious hostess whose love language was to feed people. In tribute to her caring heart, please bring a non-perishable food item to her visitation or funeral Mass, which will be donated to Topeka Rescue Mission.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, where the rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care Hospice, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or Helping Hands Humane Society and sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614
