About Mary Grosvenor

Mary Davies was the daughter of Alexander Davies, a scrivener, and inherited substantial land to the west of London from her great-uncle Hugh Audley.13

She was married to Sir Thomas Grosvenor, 3rd Baronet, at the age of 12 in 1677.

The marriage proved to be harmonious and conventional.

Grosvenor was richer than Mary, from inherited lands and mines, and he paid her mother and stepfather generously to get her.

Mary's portion consisted of' swampy meads' (marshland). The area was later to become the Mayfair, Park Lane, and Belgravia areas of London, the most valuable parts of the Grosvenor Estate.

After Grosvenor's death in 1700, Mary became a very wealthy widow.

She married her chaplain's brother Edward Fenwick in a secret ceremony in Paris in 1701.
