Mary (Wakeman) Hazzard was sent to Boston, to complete her education and as she had to go by stage coach, it is supposed that she met John Hazzard at some stopping place in Rhode Island, where the family lived. She was very handsome and accomplished, and became proficient in dancing, among other things, and this did not exactly suit the staid people of Greens-farms. Her father was the richest Wakeman of that century, so far as known, and her grandfather, Joseph, came next in point of wealth, but was much the most prominent in public life.

Her second husband, Moss Kent, was father of the well known Chancellor Kent, of New York.
