Mary Henriette Florence von Schoultz

Husband Carl Fredrik Sebastian von Schoultz was a railway engineer. His latest position was as technical quality controller of the railway construction works on a new line from Ashkhabad to Krasnowosk (Türkmenbashi), some 500 km. The family was living in Ashkhabad, but Carl Fredrik was on a duty trip along the line. In Kyzyl Arvat (todays Serdar) he was taken ill by cholera. Mary rushed from Ashkhabad to find her husband dying. She kissed farewell, contracted cholera herself and died a day after her husband.

Dagmar Ruin (nee Ramsay, born 1894) published her memories in a book about her Russian years (Söderström, Helsinki 1962). In that book she describes how she travelled with her family in the area. In Kyzyl Arvat she remembers her father stopping the chart and pointing towards an obelisk."Look, also here we have had Finns before" It was the burial monument of Carl Fredrik and Mary von Schoultz !

I have tried to get hold of an old picture of the stone but to no avail. I have also asked lokal people to look for it, but it has obviously vanished for ever. Sic transit ...
