Notes

wiki info about Richard Risley, mentioning Mary Arnold

Born prior to 1615 Died October, 1648 Hartford, Connecticut , USA Spouse(s) Mary Arnold *Richard Risley* (before 1615 - 1648) was an early Puritan settler in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and one of the founders of Hartford, Connecticut. Risley sailed from England on July 15, 1633, in the ship Griffen with Thomas Hooker , William Stone , John Cotton , and John Haynes . They arrived in Boston on September 4, 1633. In May 1636, Risley left Massachusetts with almost the entire company he had arrived with two and a half years earlier. They found John Winthrop to be too dictatorial. The group headed west through the wilderness, and after a month stopped in an area now occupied by the city of Hartford, Connecticut . Within the year, the group started a collective government to fight the Pequot War . By the next year, they had adopted what is now generally considered the first written constitution in Western history, the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut . The group eventually signed a treaty with the Indians for a tract of land and settled down. The present-day capitol building in Hartford sits on the original Risley land grant.^[3] <#cite_note-2> Risley died at Hockanum, Connecticut of typhoid in October 1648, leaving his wife and three children, ages two months to eight years. Mary had 3 children by her first husband and died shortly after giving birth to the last of her four children by her second husband.

Some give her a maiden name of Bunce (daughter of Thomas Bunce) but responsible sites appears to refute that.

Some give her a maiden name of Arnold (daughter of John Arnold), but I find no substantiation for that either. Perhaps she was not always known as "Mary".

Mary was a widow when she married William Hills. According to “The Risley Family Genealogy” by Goold, Richard Risley died in October of 1648 of Typhoid fever, leaving his wife (our Mary) and three children. The wedding to WIlliam is generally agreed to have occurred December 1648 within three months of Richard Risley's demise.

There was lively debate on the Internet over whether Joseph was born too soon after Mary's last baby by Risley to be hers - but they decided Joseph was born in 1650, not 1649, and everyone is satisified that he was in fact the son Mary (widow Risley) Hills and William.

It seems impossible to say whether she was born in the New World - if she was married in 1640, she could have been less than 20 and therefore born in the New World. So I have not identified her as an immigrant.

With her second husband, William, Mary had the following children:

iv JOSEPH (our line) , bp. 17 March 1649 (aged eight on 24 February 1657/8]; aged nine on 14 March 1658/9; m. (1) by about 1676 Hannah Edwards m. (2) about 1699 Mehitable (Hinsdale) Dickinson m. (3) by about 1703 Elizabeth _____ [Hale, House 585].

v SUSANNAH, b. about 1651 (aged six on 24 February 1657/8; aged seven on 14 March 1658/9 ; d. Glastonbury 23 October 1701 in her 50th year [Hale, House 657]); m. Wethersfield 4 March 1673[/4] John Kilborn [WetVR Barbour 174 (surname of bride not given); Hale, House 657].

vi BENJAMIN, b. about 1653 (aged four on 24 February 1657/8 [WMJ 88]; aged five on 14 March 1658/9 [WMJ 148]); m. Wethersfield 11 January 1688[/9] Mary Bronson [TAG 39:120-21].

vii BENONI, b. about 1655 (aged two and three-quarters on 24 February 1657/8 [WMJ 88]; aged four years on 14 March 1658/9 [WMJ 148]); treated by John Winthrop Jr. on 8 July 1659 [WMJ 163]; no further record.

Above is from http://members.aol.com/tlnnash/williamhills.html , a fairly serious site.

She apparently died shortly after giving birth to Benoni.

She was married to Richard RISLEY about 1640 in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. (818)(819) (820) Children were:

Sarah RISLEY (some say she married William, the son of her stepfather William, not a blood relation)

Samuel RISLEY

Richard RISLEY.

About her first husband, Wikipedia says:

Richard Risley (before 1615 - 1648) was an early Puritan settler in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and one of the founders of Hartford, Connecticut. Risley sailed from England on July 15th, 1633, in the ship Griffen with Thomas Hooker, William Stone, John Cotton, and John Haynes. They arrived in Boston on September 4, 1633.

In May 1636, Risley left Massacusetts with almost the entire company he had arrived with two and a half years earlier. They found John Winthrop to be too dictatorial. The group headed west through the wilderness, and after a month stopped in an area now occupied by the city of Hartford, Connecticut.

Within the year, the group started a collective government to fight the Pequot War. By the next year, they had adopted what is now generally considered the first written constitution in Western history, the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. The group eventually signed a treaty with the Indians for a tract of land and settled down.

The present-day capitol building in Hartford sits on the original Risley land grant.

Risley died at Hockanum, Connecticut of typhoid in October 1648, leaving his wife and three children, ages two months to eight years.

On the Pequot wars:

When Hooker’s followers moved into the Connecticut River valley, they settled on land claimed by the Pequots Indians, who decided to resist and struck at Wethersfield in April 1637, killing several people. A force of 77 Puritans (including Richard Risley) and Narragansett Indians, who hated the Pequots, retaliated a month later by surrounding and setting fire to the main Pequot village on the Mystic River. Some 400 men, women, and children died in the flames. “Horrible was the stink and scent thereof,” wrote one Puritan, but destroying the Pequots “seemed a sweet sacrifice” to assure peace and safety of those seeking to plant themselves on fertile Connecticut lands. The victors of the bloody massacre returned to their homes and families. Richard Risley never had the chance to tell his grandchildren of his exploits in the Pequot War. He died of typhoid fever in October, 1648 leaving three young children.

Richard Risley’s descendants now number in the tens of thousands, scattered all over the United States. Their ancestors were raised by our ancestor their stepfather, William Hills

Mary Risely formerly Arnold
Born before 1600 in Englandmap [uncertain] Daughter of [father unknown] and [mother unknown] [sibling%28s%29 unknown] Wife of Richard Risely — married [date unknown] [location unknown] Mother of Elizabeth (Unknown) Irish Died [date unknown] [location unknown] Profile manager: Rev Daniel Washburn Jones private message [send private message] Last modified 14 September 2015.

Biography

Elizabeth Risely was born ca. 1613, a daughter possibly of Richard and Mary (Arnold) Risely and died on 28 Aug. 1687 in Duxbury.

Maltby cites the below as references for the above: Little Compton Families, Little Compton, RI, 1967 by Benjamin Franklin Wilbour p. 370, taken apparently from the Compendium of American Genealogy, Vol. 6, p. 785.

FHL Ancestral File for John Irish and Elizabeth Risely, submitted by Larry S. Christiansen, of Tullahoma, TN, Fae S. Cobbley, of American Fork, UT, Robert A. Valentine, of Overland Park, KS, Scott A. Tracy, of Payette, ID, and many others.

He then states: I have not been able to confirm her maiden name from reliable published sources or through original record research.

So I will be marking these parents as "Uncertain".

English Origins of the Washburn Families of Plymouth Colony and Hempstead, Long Island" byJohn Maltby - Phillip Washburn

Most researchers relying on primary sources (Jacobus, etc.) do not feel that her maiden name is known. She married first Richard Risley of Hockanum, and after his death she remarried William Hills. She remained with him until her death, which likely resulted from complications following the birth of her last child, Benoni, in 1655.
