About Mary Hyde

Family

From the Visitation of Wiltshire (c1623), though "not sufficiently proved," we know that Nicholas Hide (Hyde) de Marlinesburie = Maria filia Arthur Swaine de Sarson and had the following issue:

  1. Arthur (s. and h., d. 1654),
  2. Laurence (h. to his brother),
  3. Edward, and
  4. Robert, with 3 or 4 daughters,
  5. Judith (b. 1605, m. 1624 Edmund Okeden of Moor Crichell, Dorset),
  6. Anna,
  7. Maria, and
  8. (possibly) Elizabeth.
  9. also seen - Catherine, married Robert Gore

Nicholas Hyde was the son of Lawrence Hyde of West Hatch, Wilts, and Gussage St. Michell (Chest?) and his wife, Anne, daughter of Nicholas Sibell of Farningham, Kent.

He was grandson of Robert Hyde, great grandson of Thomas Hyde, and great, great grandson of Hamlet (Hammet?) Hyde, all of Norbury, Chest.

Nicholas Hyde wrote his will 20 May 1630.His daughter, Anna was mentioned and was to receive the income from three small properties, indicating that at that time she was not married.

Nicholas Hyde d. 25 August 1631.Dame Mary received probate of his will in 1631.She d. not long thereafter and her eldest son Arthur was given legal power to administer the estate of his late father on 13 July 1633.

Anna is believed to have married Robert Carew (b. 1604/5), a younger son of John Carew of Haccombe, Devon, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Hill of Shilston, Dorset. The story goes that Robert and Anne went to Ireland about 1629 where they founded the family of Carew of Castleboro, co. Wexford.

Carew MS. 187 found in the Genealogical Office, Nationl Library, Dublin, has Anne Hyde of Westminster, widow, ob. interstate, administration 9 June 1661, sister of Lawrence Hyde of Cottington (Collington?), England.Have not been able to find a Lawrence Hyde of Cottington or Collington with a sister named Anne or Anna. So far, have not been able to find the manor of Cottington anywhere in England. There is however, a manor of Collington in Hereford, but have not been able to link that manor to a Lawrence Hyde.

Note: Spring-Summer 2001 Tom Magness obtained the following notes from Mrs. Joan Carew Richardson. Mrs. R. maintains that . . .

Anne Hyde was not married when her father made out his will on 20 May 1630. He left the income from a large part of his estate for the use of his wife for her lifetime. The income from three small properties was to be paid to Anne and her heirs. However, if her eldest brother Arthur preferred, he could within one year of his father's death pay 1200 pounds to Anne in full settlement of her inheritance. Anne's older sister Judith married Edmund Okeden in 1624 and doubtless her marriage portion was settled then as she is not mentioned in her father's will. Likewise, had Anne been married at that time, she probably would not have been mentioned either. Sir Nicholas' widow, Dame Mary Hyde, received probate of his will in 1631. She died not long afterwards having failed to make a will. Arther, her son, was given legal power to administer the estate of his late father on 13 July 1633.
